CIO Taiwan Interview

The emergence of digital technologies such as the cloud, IoT, big data, and AI has fostered the development of many smart applications that have in turn increased industry competition and reshuffling. Unwilling to become an outcast in the digital race, enterprises are vigorously trying to create useful real-time application services through IoT, IIoT (industrial internet of things), and edge computing.

Wisdom Gathering Consulting introduced VANTIQ to help Taiwan create various smart application scenarios

IoT / IIoT Information exchange involves complex system integration, thus enterprises need to assemble elite development teams and invest a lot of time to integrate different systems, as well as develop and test thousands of lines of codes to bring the application system online. Furthermore, due to the diversity of IoT/IIoT application scenarios, the system process, and business regulations will change frequently, forcing the developers to constantly make modifications and conduct regression testing in order to maintain the system’s quality.

Although this is a monumental challenge for enterprises, they will not be able to realize digital transformation if the obstacle is not overcome. In light of this, Wisdom Gathering Consulting, which focuses on the goal of “enhancing corporate values”, signed an exclusive agent agreement with VANTIQ this year (2020). The aim is to help Taiwanese enterprises cultivate advanced innovation capabilities by importing the system featuring “application platform as a service (aPAAS)”, “real-time data processing”, “low-code programming”, and “event-driven architecture (EDA)”.

Processing of 100,000 events per second in real-time to satisfy the service application needs of our clients

According to Wisdom Gathering Consulting CEO Angel Lo, when API Gateway was unveiled in 2010, people were excited to finally have a sound mechanism to cope with the constant flow of messages and help the enterprises quickly respond to different events. However, little did they know that the API Gateway only resolves communication problems, and essentially it still involves the collection of big data to drive post-event analysis and processing. When EDA was launched in 2018, enterprises could finally materialize the real-time processing of big data. VANTIQ, the leader in the EDA industry, is capable of processing up to 100,000 events per second.

Angel Lo elaborates that it was very difficult for different systems to exchange information in the past, as the API port connecting each other must be defined and the information format must be checked before the call between the 2 sides can be made. If one side is upgraded and changed in the future, the compatibility between the 2 sides must be verified again. One must go through all this trouble just to complete one data exchange. How is it feasible for an enterprise to adopt such inefficient development, deployment, and maintenance model considering the diversity of the real-time events and IoT/IIoT application scenarios that must be processed. VANTIQ adopted a different approach, where a centralized platform is provided, allowing all the systems to upload their events before certain specific systems, smart equipment, or people receive the messages on the platform based on the predetermined event rules, where they can collaborate and respond accordingly. Every component only interacts with the VANTIQ platform without engaging in private exchanges through the API. This means that both old and new application programs can upload their messages to the platform without becoming data silos because they can all make contributions to the enterprise’s digitization process.

“VANTIQ provides comprehensive Open API ports and adopts advanced processing engine for real-time data, while the infrastructure has undergone complete development, testing, and optimization,” says Angel Lo. Consequently, VANTIQ allows for low-code development through intuitive web-based design tools. A wide range of data sorting and condition-setting components are provided in advance, enabling the developer to drag the needed components and present the process nodes in the form of a context diagram to materialize seamless data ingestion, business logic rule formulation, and the creation of a component-based platform, thereby allowing for the rapid development of various IoT/IIoT applications.

Low-code development appeal significantly accelerates project progress

Numerous iconic enterprises worldwide have demonstrated the value of smart applications through VANTIQ. Using “smart city” as an example, SoftBank in Japan utilized VANTIQ to develop smart systems for its building and surrounding facilities by completing system analysis and programming in 14 days, integrating 17 suppliers, 5 IoT protocols, and over 1,000 IoT equipment, materializing in real-time processing, linking, as well as event real-time alerting and commanding, etc. INESA applied VANTIQ to develop a monitoring and management system for 250,000 elevators in the city, capable of accommodating different real-time data formats and streaming video data from different elevator manufacturers to ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and protection of all the elevators. In terms of “smart manufacturing”, a major global OEM has used VANTIQ as the foundation and applied 3D BIM to present a “digital twin”, where changes in the condition of the building or equipment are monitored in real-time to determine their impact on the factory equipment’s OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and the preventive maintenance program. In addition, successful VANTIQ examples have been demonstrated in other fields including “smart logistics”, “car insurance application”, or “disaster relief”.

According to Angel Lo, although Wisdom Gathering has only become the exclusive agent of VANTIQ for a short time, it has proactively engaged in numerous projects such as the real-time monitoring and reporting of the shipping status of hazardous chemicals, smart public toilet management, and automated escalator equipment monitoring and advanced warning, etc, hoping to facilitate the digital transformation of the Taiwanese government and enterprises. She also mentions several important quantifiable indicators generated by VANTIQ including saving up to 2/3 manpower and time compared to traditional development, reducing project risks by 70% through reliable system quality, and improving the business process development and integration efficiency by more than fivefold.
